This Sunday, come rain or shine, the newest class of Davidson College graduates will don their cap & gown for the 2013 Commencement. For an Innkeeper, there’s no better time of year than when all the family & friends show up to celebrate graduation. Part of that might have to do with the knowledge that this new class of graduates is well prepared to go out and pursue lives of leadership and service. Another part is, as one parent told me, is being able to write checks to Davidson College on a voluntary basis. Regardless, it’s a weekend full of smiling faces and we are thankful to a be a part of it. Hope to see you out there.

With spring weather finally here we ready ourselves for a local event that celebrates the many scottish ancestors who settled in this region. The Rural Hill Scottish Festival & Loch Norman Highland Games take place on the family lands of John and Violet Davidson, whose parents emigrated to the colonies from Dundee, Scotland. Set on over 200 acres of rolling farmland near the Catawba River , Rual Hill is the perfect setting for a day of Scottish sites, sounds, and smells. From the bag piping competitions to the delicious Haggis at the festival food court, the kid’s zone, or the Historic encampment, there’s something for everyone. The Festival takes place on April 20th & 21st. For more information on the event go to - http://www.ruralhillscottishfestivals.net/

I noticed one day while riding my bike home through campus while students were out on their spring break that something new was going up next to the flag pole. Turns out it’s the lastest addition to the campus sculpture program and it’s titled “Waves III”. The stone and stainless steel structure was created by Spanish sculptor, Jaume Plensa, in 2011. This is the fifth sculpture installed on the campus and it sits on a 7,000 lb. rock. For more information about the piece check out – “Waves III”. The official dedication of Waves III will take place, Wednesday, April 17, at 4:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, March 5th, Davidson will be full of green thumbs. That’s right, it’s the 29th gathering for the Davidson Horticultural Symposium. While the Davidson College students are on their spring break gardeners from across the south come to town for the annual gathering. Never heard of a vertical garden? Not ready for the unexpected houseplant? Looking for a contemplative garden or a beautiful edible landscape. These are just some of the seeds you’ll hear about at the conference.

With only two home games remaining both the Men’s & Women’s basketball teams have been on a roll as they get ready to head to Asheville for the Southern Conference Tournament. The Men have the number one seed wrapped up and beat the north division leader, Elon, last night on the road. For the third time this season Jake Cohen was named player of the week as the Wildcats extended their win streak to 13. This Saturday at 2pm is Senior Day for the Men as the Cats take on Georgia Southern, who gave Davidson their only conference loss this season. And what a class of seniors – Jake Cohen, JP Kuhlman, Nik Cochran and Clint Mann.

The Women’s team has also been on tear, with a loss to Chattanooga on Monday snapping their eight game road win streak. Last week senior Sophia Aleksandravicius was named the Southern Conference player of the week, her third time winning the award. Their final home game is Monday against Western Carolina at 7pm.

Last night at the Duke Family Performing Arts Center on the campus of Davidson College Angela Davis spoke to a capacity crowd about her life as an activist and what that means in today’s world. Now a Distinguished Professor Emerita at University of California, Santa Cruz, Ms. Davis recalled her days in Wilmington, N.C., her involvement with the Black Panther Party and even her time on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list. Her advocacy for all oppressed people included her support for immigration reform, prison reform and the people of Palestine. Her style was relaxed as she floated from one subject to another often having to refer back to her notes as she reminisced about her life, from growing up in Birmingham, AL, to the Civil Rights (or Freedom) Movement, and her days in prison. The audience seemed to ride along with her, sometimes clapping loudly as she recalled certain key figures or events. The program was part of Davidson College’s Wearn Lecture series and was followed by a reception in the Atrium.
