Cycle the Davidson Greenway for a Day of Exercise & Exploration

With the weather reaching un-seasonally warm temperatures recently, there’s no better place to get out and explore the outdoors than on the Davidson greenway. The linear parks that make up the greenway connect neighborhoods throughout the town and are encouraging people to get out and get moving. The Davidson greenway is one of the many examples of how the metro area is benefiting this small town. People often enjoy walking, running, cycling and rollerblading on the Davidson greenway, as well as the greater area’s trails.

Be sure to download the Davidson, NC Vacation Guide to learn more about what the town has to offer. The Davidson Greenway is part of a larger network of urban green spaces, the Mecklenburg County Greenway. This network of trails stretches for 35 miles throughout the county.  The trails provide recreation, transportation, fitness and economic benefits to the towns. The Mecklenburg and Davidson Greenways are a designated leg of the Carolina Thread Trail, which connects 15 Counties, two states, and 2.3 million people through greenways. The Davidson Greenway is connected via various routes which can be found on this map.

Here are a few of the trails to check out:

West Branch Rocky River Greenway

The West Branch Rocky River Greenway is a 1.1 mile, paved path that is part of the Carolina Thread Trail. The trail is one way and is used as a connector trail to the West Branch Nature Preserve Trail. This area is great for exploring wildlife and also a great spot to bring the kids for frog and tadpole hunting in the spring.

South Prong Rocky River Greenway

The South Prong Rocky River greenway runs along the South Prong of the Rocky River connecting downtown Davidson to the southeastern neighborhoods. This path is 5.7 miles in length and is rated easy for its wide paved paths. The trailhead is located south of the Davidson Elementary School.

An overland connector leads people from the South Prong Rocky River Greenway to the West Branch Rocky River Greenway. Although the connector does take you back to city streets, it’s just a mile farther until the next greenway. The connector is a nice change of scenery, which can be welcome if you’re working out. Together both trails add up to 6.28 miles of trails or a 12.56-mile round-trip, which is a significant length if you’re looking for a serious workout. These aren’t the only Davidson greenway trails.
